Page Content

Differential protection is a fast, selective relay method that isolates faults within a defined zone by comparing currents entering and leaving the protected equipment.

Overview of Relay Protection

Relay protection is a critical aspect of power system safety, designed to detect abnormal conditions such as short circuits, overloads, or equipment failures, and to isolate the affected section to prevent damage and maintain system stability. Relays monitor electrical quantities like current, voltage, or frequency, and operate circuit breakers when these quantities exceed preset thresholds. Common types include overcurrent, undervoltage, distance, and differential relays, each tailored for specific protection needs.

Differential Protection Principle

Differential protection operates on the principle of Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL), which states that the sum of currents entering a node must equal the sum leaving it. A differential relay (ANSI device 87) measures currents at the boundaries of a protected zone, such as a transformer winding, generator, busbar, or transmission line. The relay calculates the differential current (I_diff) as the difference between incoming and outgoing currents. Under normal conditions or during external faults, the differential current is near zero, and the relay remains inactive. If an internal fault occurs, the differential current exceeds a set threshold, causing the relay to trip the associated circuit breakers and isolate the faulty equipment immediately .

Key Features and Advantages

  • Fast and selective: Differential relays respond almost instantaneously to internal faults, minimizing equipment damage .
  • Unit protection: Only faults within the defined zone trigger the relay, avoiding unnecessary tripping for external faults .
  • High sensitivity: Can detect low-level faults that overcurrent relays might miss .
  • Applications: Widely used for transformers, generators, motors, busbars, and transmission lines .

Technical Considerations

  • Current Transformers (CTs): Accurate CT connections, polarity, and ratio matching are essential for reliable operation .
  • Percentage Restraint: To prevent false tripping due to CT saturation or inrush currents, many differential relays use a percentage restraint characteristic, which compares the differential current to a restraining current derived from the sum of through currents .
  • Compensation: Transformer winding configurations may require phase and ratio compensation to ensure correct differential current measurement .

Summary

Differential protection is a unit-type, fast-acting, and highly selective protection scheme that isolates internal faults within a defined zone by comparing currents at the zone boundaries. Its sensitivity, speed, and selectivity make it indispensable for protecting critical power system equipment, ensuring reliability, and minimizing damage during faults .
