Fiber Optic Cables and Cables in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is actively expanding its fiber optic network both domestically and internationally to enhance connectivity, economic modernization, and digital independence.

Domestic Fiber Optic Expansion

Uzbekistan is implementing a major project to install 438 km of fiber optic cables in the Andijan, Namangan, and Fergana regions. This initiative, led by JSC “ELEKTRQISHLOQQURILISH”, is part of the Electricity Sector Transformation and Resilient Transmission (ESTART) Project, financed in part by the World Bank. The project includes Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), Underground Fiber Optic Cable (UGFOC), and Optical Fiber Approach Cable (OFAC), aiming to modernize the electricity transmission system and improve the efficiency of the national grid . Additionally, Uzbekistan has local manufacturers such as ARTIKUL KABEL LLC and Kabel Tech LLC, which produce high-quality fiber optic cables and other cable products meeting international standards. These companies are expanding production to meet growing domestic demand and support infrastructure projects .

International Connectivity and Strategic Projects

Uzbekistan is also pursuing international fiber optic connections to reduce reliance on Russian-controlled internet routes. A key initiative involves laying a trans-Caspian fiber optic cable to connect directly with Azerbaijan, bypassing Russia. This project, supported by the Saudi-based firm DataVolt, is considered strategically and economically important, potentially generating multi-billion-dollar benefits and supporting Uzbekistan's digital economy. DataVolt is collaborating with global tech companies like Oracle and Amazon to expand Uzbekistan's digital infrastructure . Furthermore, the Global Optical Communication Uzbekistan (GOC-UZ) joint venture, in cooperation with South Korean companies and Uzbektelecom, produces over 50,000 km of fiber optic cables annually and has signed agreements with Kyrgyztelecom to supply fiber optic cables, enhancing regional connectivity .

Strategic and Economic Implications

These projects aim to:
